How a Twitch overlay differs from a generic overlay

A Twitch overlay must work in the viewer context: next to chat, inside the player, on mobile, and in VODs. It is not only a nice OBS layer; it should avoid blocking the stream and help viewers react.

Set one stable layout for Twitch first, then adapt it to YouTube or Kick. Twitch has a different chat rhythm, different command placement, and different viewer expectations for alerts.

A good starting set has three elements: alert, donation goal, and recent events. Every additional widget needs a clear job or the overlay starts competing with gameplay and camera.

Step 1: choose the format for the Twitch scene

For the main scene, use a 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720 canvas that matches how you actually stream. Test the overlay in that same format, not only in the panel preview.

Leave safe zones for the camera, in-game chat, captions, and HUD elements. If you stream gameplay, do not assume the lower edge is always free.

Starting soon and break scenes can use a heavier overlay. Gameplay scenes usually work better with a restrained version: fewer animations, shorter text, and a predictable alert position.

Step 2: add the overlay as a Browser Source

In OBS, add `Sources` -> `+` -> `Browser`, paste the private overlay URL, and set the size to match your canvas. OBS Browser Source is effectively a built-in browser for pages and widgets, so the overlay URL does not need a separate plugin.

Start at 30 FPS and enable refresh when the scene becomes active if you switch scenes often. Do not force aggressive restarts on every transition unless tests show a problem.

Name sources clearly: `Twitch overlay - main`, `Twitch alert`, `Twitch goal`. During an incident you will know which link or layer to inspect first.

Step 3: fit layers around chat and commands

The overlay should support the conversation, not replace Twitch chat. If viewers use a donation command, the alert and goal should confirm the action without covering where the streamer reads messages.

Place an alert above or near the camera only when the streamer reaction is important. If the camera is small, the upper corner or lower third is usually easier to read.

Keep recent events static and lightly animated. Viewers should quickly see that support is happening, but the list should not feel like a second chat.

Step 4: run a viewer-side test before publishing

Open a Twitch preview or test recording and inspect the overlay like a viewer: alert readability, goal placement, and whether text survives stream compression.

Test three scenarios: manual alert, goal update, and recent event. After each one, switch scenes and confirm the source does not become blank.

Run one mobile check. Some viewers will watch the overlay on a small screen, so text that looks fine on a monitor may be too small inside the Twitch app.

What to measure after launching the Twitch overlay

After publishing, measure article CTA clicks, `twitch-overlay` setup starts, and sessions that return to widget editing after the first test.

On the channel, watch whether the overlay helps support reactions: more alert replies, more questions about the goal, or fewer questions about the donation link.

Experiment P08-E1 should compare a minimal overlay with a more dynamic variant. The winner is not the prettier design; it is the variant with better CTR and engagement without readability complaints.
